Bretton Walberg recognized the need to help patients who struggled to manage multiple medications and ultimately decrease hospital readmissions. One in five Medicare patients is readmitted to the hospital within 30 days, and patient confusion about medication is the leading trigger to their readmission. With this in mind, he created his first adherence program Care-Fill.
“I use Parata PASS strip packaging to make it easier for patients to take their medications as prescribed and for me to grow my business,” says Bretton.”
“We were filling people’s plastic boxes, four weeks of planners, for them,” states Bretton. “They spilled and fell, and then patients were taking meds out of the Monday box on Sunday. It was more of a hassle than a benefit.” He knew there was a way to increase the efficiency of Care-Fill and maximize its impact.
Bretton found that solution in Parata Pass strip packaging. “I use Parata PASS strip packaging to make it easier for patients to take their medications as prescribed and for me to grow my business,” says Bretton.
Care-Fill transformed, leading to increased time savings, accuracy, and safety. His patients love that their medications and supplements are packaged together and clearly labeled by date and time of dose. 23 years later, Care-Fill is still going strong with services offered at all 11 Walberg Family Pharmacy locations.
The program has not only significantly improved adherence, but also gave Walberg Family Pharmacies opportunities to partner with local hospitals and long-term care facilities to help reduce readmission rates and support a wider population.
With the time saving provided by streamlining Care-Fill, and automating his dispensing processes, the Walberg Family Pharmacy team has time to focus on community outreach and developing meaningful connections with his patients.
